Dan T. Wye is interested in the unnatural environments in which captive animals live and the human obsession of preserving life. For his two series Freedom Cubed and Ageing Oak, Wye has photographed in zoos and natural history museums, mainly Bristol City Museum. The former project focuses on the zoo environments themselves, their inhabitants tiny, hidden, or to the side of the frame. The artist states, “reducing the visibility of the animals themselves emulates the experience of going to the zoo and hopelessly looking for the animal within the enclosure.” I almost feel guilty for trying to spot the animal, like an I Spy.
