Day 1.
Skott Chandler showed some images by Bertillon, who was a part of my thesis research, so it was cool to see how his images impacted another artist.

Kerry Rogers
-
Edie Winograde

Jeremias Paul showed really interesting and cool work. Jeremias has been the Southwest Regional Chair the past few years.

Aline Smithson, Featured Speaker
Always amazing and wonderful. I had a review with her Day 2. I adore Aline.
-
Day 2.
Danielle Julian Norton
-
Jessamyn Lovell
Jessamyn and Laura Pressley, Executive Director of Center, gave a talk about “The Art of Submission,” particularly about Jessamyn’s work, “Catastrophe, Crisis, and Other Family Traditions” and Center.
-
Bill Adams
Always the most AMAZING speaker. His talks redefine the entertaining artist talk. Again, my bias as his former student is irrelevant. He is making incredible work and he is such an engaging speaker, talks like his are why I go to SPE.

David Zimmerman

Phil Toledano, Keynote Speaker
It’s almost impossible to pick one image to represent him here. I am completely in love with almost all of his work, and he as a speaker totally lived up to his reputation. I was so impressed.
So posts like these are really just for myself and my own notes, but I also just wanted to say…
A short list of tips for SPE speakers:
Make interesting work. Be interested in your own work.
Be an interesting speaker. Don’t read your presentation.
Don’t overuse “actually,” “kind of,” “this idea of,” etc., talk like a human and not an art jargon robot
Use your time wisely
Be charming and nice to look at and have an English accent, and also make great work and make people laugh, and really you can do no wrong in life.
