I have this little collection of postcards of animal illustrations and I’ve never known who the artist is that created them. When I saw a post on Tumblr of illustrations by Charles Livingston Bull, I got super excited because I thought I’d finally discovered the artist’s identity. But upon further research, I was wrong (the artist is Paul Bransom—the stuff of another post).

Still, I think these illustrations by Bull are gorgeous; timeless. He was born in 1874 and lived until 1932, studying taxidermy in Rochester, NY, and then working as a taxidermist in Washington, DC. According to Wikipedia, “Bull lived for many years near the Bronx Zoo in New York to allow close access to be able to sketch living animals.” I’m really interested in the variety of animals and scenarios depicted by Bull. Some are realistic, some symbolic, some mysterious.
